How does the rent increase affect Universal Credit & Housing Benefit Claimants

Universal Credit

If you receive Universal Credit you will need to sign into your on-line journal on or around 1st April and will be prompted via your ‘To Do’ list to confirm your new your housing costs. The cost will be as set out in your recent letter from us.

If you do not do this and your rent has increased you will not receive the correct amount of help and will accrue an arrear.

Housing Benefit

If you receive Housing Benefit you will get a letter very soon (you may have already received it) from Glasgow City Council which tells you what your entitlement will be. However, this letter will not include the most recent changes to your rent. This is because we were not able to update the Council in January when they asked us for the new rent figure as we had not yet concluded the rent consultation.  The information about the rent changes has since been sent to the Council and an updated letter will be sent out by them to you later in April which will include the new rent figure.

You do not need to do anything unless there have been any changes to your income and your entitlement has changed, in which case you should inform Glasgow Council or you can ask to speak to our Welfare Benefits team for advice. They can be contacted on 0141 9592552.
